The alarm clock went off at 5am. Agnes sluggishly opened her eyes and got out of bed. She stretched and mumbled something about how good the weather was for sleeping. She moved across the room where Tola laid at the top tier of the bunk bed.

Wake up sleepy-head! We can’t be late for church today.”

Tola stirred and pulled the cover over her head. Agnes tapped her more violently. “You didn’t go last week, remember ?” “I studied my Bible and prayed after all. That’s what matters! I’m too tired to go to church today“,

Tola said yawning. “I’ll stream the service online today but I’ll go next week. Promise!

I guess you already know how that story went. Yes, you guessed right! She didn’t go to church that week or the week after.

If there was a book titled, ‘How to be Christian but not go to church‘, it’ll sell sadly. You know why? Well, I don’t know why exactly but I know it’s somewhere between :

People not knowing the essence of going to church & Always wanting to go down the easy work-free road in life.

After all, I’m the church“, they say and quote 1 Corinthians 3:16 to buttress their point; “I am temple of God and God’s Spirit dwells in me“.

No doubt, you are God’s temple and His Spirit dwells in you but God also instructed that you fellowship with other believers as a church.

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV

In this post, I’ll be showing you several truths. You will find out if and why you need to go to church. As always, the Bible will be our main reference as the Word of God is our standard as Christians not what we think or feel.

Let’s dive right in.

  1. What is the church?
  2. Why you should go to a local church
  3. Conclusion

What is the church?

The church is made up of God’s people. It is the gathering of believers in Christ. The physical building is not the church but allows believers to come together, fellowship and worship God.

So eventually, you see that the question should be “Who is the church?

We are the church!

“For where two or three are gathered in My name [meeting together as My followers], I am there among them”

Matthew 18:20 AMP

Before now, the early church assembled together. They fellowshipped, ate together, worshipped God and encouraged each other. It was included in the Bible as a template for us in our day and time. We are to come together, fellowship and worship God as one body just like the early church.

P.S: I’m not trying to downplay the place of personal fellowship and communion. There has to be a balance though.

46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Acts 2:46-47 NLT

Why you should go to a local church

  • You need the church to grow. Studying your Bible and praying everyday as good as those are aren’t enough to maintain growth. You need those doses of God’s Word, prayer, and regular fellowship with God and others to maintain growth and stay in God’s will. Heb. 10:24-25
  • You are not the church. The church is a group of believers in Christ so there’s no way that you, alone are the church. Rom. 12:4-5
  • God encourages community. On your own, you are prone to fall out of the Way. When you don’t have people who share the same faith as you, you can easily fall into temptations, get discouraged and probably leave the faith. God didn’t design for you to walk alone in this journey of faith, He encourages community and you should embrace it as His obedient child.

Conclusion

Please join a local church. Enough of the online services and personal fellowship only.

I’ll stream the service online you might say“.

No! You might end up multitasking and not fully concentrate on the service.

Instead, go to church. Actively participate in your local church.

Maybe you’ve been hurt or disappointed by church people. Well, the church isn’t perfect. The church is made up of imperfect people, coming together to be made perfect by God. Though the church may be flawed, it doesn’t change the truth that fellowshipping with the church is important.

You see this perfection? It won’t stop until Jesus returns so, prayerfully try joining a local church again.

Why do you think people don’t go to church?

Please let me know in the comment section as I always love to hear from you.

I hope you’ve been inspired. Don’t forget to share on your social media platforms.

I fully agree that going to church is very important. Listening to the word of God, communal worship and the direction of the ministers of God in church sessions cannot be compared to a virtual experience talk less of not going at all. God loves unity and fellowship and confirmed it in Mathew 18:19-20 “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there with them”. I enjoyed every piece of this by the way. May God continue to bless his words in our heart.

      Yes! I totally agree.💯

A virtual experience or not going to church at all can’t be compared to being physically present.

      Amen!🤲

Many Christian believe that God is everywhere. Some even say if I call God inside my room he would hear my prayers
Yeah that’s just the plain truth. God is always present in every situation
Despite that, why some christian don’t believe in fellowship or let me say gathering of believers is caused by some churches
The church also has a vital role to play in this matter
    1. Churches should stop criticism
    2. Churches should try to embrace and welcome christians
    3. There should be brotherly love in the church
Let churches learn to be brother keepers
    4. Unnecessary donations can make christian avoid coming to Church
    5. Lot of churches only recognize the Rich and ignore the poor or less priviledged
(Let’s not forget why Jesus Christ came to the Earth…. The Bible made us know that he came for the poor and not the Rich)
Most church are after Fat checks for offering and tithe
I strongly believe if those few points can be applied in the church,
    there would be massive changes
@gloryinspires, thanks for this wonderful medium of inspiration

      Yes!
Believing that God is Omnipresent is another reason why many people don’t prioritize the gathering of believers.

You’ve said quite a lot and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

The church is moving towards perfection and God will keep helping us. Amen!🙏

      Thank you again!😊

People don’t go to church because they feel that God is Omnipresent (everywhere), and they can reach Him from the comfort of their homes, not necessarily when they gather with other believers.
The irony of this is that, they tend miss out on the warmth, bond, joy and every other benefit that accompanies brethren fellowshipping together.
God bless you for this insightful piece!

Thank God for technology, it has made humans achieve things more easily and efficiently but there ought to be balance and this issue depicts that, wisdom needs to be deployed here. During Covid, technology helped and it helped some believers to know and come to terms that our God is moved by how far we are or how close we are together, I.e, there is no barrier as distance with God, but since the restrictions had been lifted by the Government, I don’t see why Christians stay at home, streaming services except for some unavoidable situations. If we, call ourselves family, then we ought to portray that by “longing” to go to the church just as the Pslamist of old. There is a level of God’s atmosphere that can be attracted in our personal fellowship. Do not give in to the antics of the devil, “no man grows or develops in isolation”, even though as the writer of this article pointed that the church is not perfect and her flaws might have hurt you in one way or the other, let God heal your heart and also remember let the Holy Spirit lead you to the place of worship, “for He sets the lowly in family”- Ps. 68:6. God bless the writer of this article.

    Church is important

The devil knows exactly what he needs to do, that is why he has made his agents try to break the unity of Christians. They know our strength lies in the church…

They used Covid as one of their main tools to break our gatherings.

After that, there was such a thing as “online service” 😂

    My summary.

What soldier goes to war alone?

What ant goes to fetch for food alone (those ones na so so sugar they like they pursue)?

It is essential to stay strong and together as Christians. No better time to do so, than in this generation.

Remember your article on Godly friendships. I just wanted to add that it’ll be hard to get Godly friends if you don’t attend church physically (not saying that’s the only way to get them. Just saying that’s one of the easiest ways to)

Accountability is also a benefit. It’s easy for someone to hold you accountable when you’re part of a physical community

Plus does anyone knows how communion works via life stream?

      Hmm
      True!
Attending church physically allows you to mix with people and increases your chances of making godly friends.

      Hmm accountability too.

      Does anyone know?😸
