“What on earth am I here for?”, Dan said to himself”
A little backstory . . .
Dan had all he had ever dreamt of as a child. He was a successful photographer and CEO of Dee Photography. He loved to capture beautiful moments and preserve them regardless of time. He had cars, houses, workers and all the good stuff. He was literally living the life. Dan grew up in a Christian home so had a knowledge of GOD. He never really devoted his life to Him though. He lived a seemingly fulfilled life but was he really fulfilled? He sought for something deeper than he knew. There was a void in his heart that all the money, cars and success just didn’t fill. He needed to know what he was on earth for . . .
“The LORD has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked [according to their role] for the day of evil.”PROV. 16:4 AMP
‘You have a purpose!’, ‘Your life has a meaning!’, ‘You have a destiny!’ ‘Dare to be different!’ These and more have been said over and over. What really is this purpose everyone speaks of?
Purpose is simply the reason you were created. The very problem God saw and said, “There she is! There he is! The solution to this and that problem.” Purpose gives your life a meaning.
Like Lecrae in his song, Illuminate, he was lost because he didn’t know why he was living. His life made sense when he discovered it though.
How do I find purpose?
Let me share some practical ways to discovering purpose with you:
- Find GOD and Build a relationship with Him : So this is how it goes:
God is a Master Artist. He is the greatest, even greater than Leonardo da Vinci or Bob Ross and He has a plan for your life. You are an artwork who is supposed to watch as he reveals to you bit by bit, the big picture.
Just like a manufacturer dictates what a product’s use is, so does GOD reveal our purpose to us. Apart from Him, you can only guess and get it wrong. Like Dan, there is GOD-shaped hole that all the money and cars you have won’t fill. The hole can only be filled by GOD.
- Discover your passion : your passions are those things you do that excite you. Your passion could be Art, Health or Music so, identify them. Identify those things you love doing and groom them.
- Figure out your gifts and abilities: you are unique and God in turn gave you unique gifts and abilities. He gave you these things not just for your use but to reach out to others. Honestly examine them. Ask people too then, compare with activities people often ask for your help with. (Check Matt. 25:14-29 AMP)
- Examine your experiences and the lessons learned from them : A famous quote goes thus, ‘Experience is the best teacher, and the worst experiences teach the best lessons.‘ Well, this is very true. Many of the people making great impact today are products of a myriad of experiences. The good, the bad and the ugly, all make up something beautiful eventually. Don’t discard any of your experiences.
Don’t forget that God is the One with the plan and should be consulted. Every other thing serves as a pointer to purpose.
You’re probably wondering, “how do I know that I am going to fulfill purpose?” As long as you walk with the Holy Spirit, He will guide your steps. If for some reason, you go off the trail, He will get you back on track.
You’re also probably wondering, “what if I make a mistake?” Well, God still chose you despite seeing all the mistakes you will ever make. Your silly mistakes are not an issue for Him.
Do you know what happens when The Creator and His creation work together? History is made! A problem is solved! There is great impact!
In essence dear one, dare to make your life count by living out God’s plan for your life.
Mind you, don’t get so obsessed with finding or discovering purpose that you miss out on every step. Sometimes, the destination is in the journey.
