Jesus, meek and gentle,
Son of God most High,
Pitying, loving Savior,
Hear Thy children’s cry.
GEORGE RUNDELL PRYNNE
Irene was badly hurt by Priscilla. They had been engaged in a conversation earlier and Priscilla said some hurtful words. Irene felt wronged but her meek spirit did not allow her “get even.” Instead she was full of pity for Priscilla’s attitude. She didn’t even give chances to the thoughts the devil was bringing to her head…
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:7 NLT
Now, I know what you might be thinking. Irene acted weak, yeah? Well, you’re not wrong. That’s what it looked like but she did not act weak.
You see, meekness means a lot of things. It means to be mild, moderate or humble. The Hebrew word translated “meekness” is anav or anaw, meaning “depressed (figuratively), in mind (gentle) or circumstances (needy, especially saintly): humble, lowly, meek, poor” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance).
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5 KJV
It also means to have a submissive quality. Submission these days is a topic that raises a lot of arguments. Well, I will have you know that submission is having strength but being able to keep it under control.
Also, nowadays, being meek is seen as being weak. Meekness is not weakness though. Jesus Christ was meek in the sense that He came down in all of His glory to save us from our sins, guilt and shame. He humbled Himself to obey the will of His Father.
“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.“
Philippians 2:6-8 NLT
Meekness has not been completely described. Meekness has a name though ; Jesus. He is meek and gentle. Let Jesus reveal what it means to be meek even as you walk through life.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 KJV
