Adesua had a really messy past before she met Christ. Just like you, she has heard a thousand and one times that she is free from her past and forgiven by GOD. She has held on to it as far as she can remember.
Occasionally, she has this feeling of guilt and condemnation overwhelming her. Flashes and calls from her past haunt her not even in dreams, but while she is wide awake. It feels as though GOD has deserted her. The last time this happened, it ate deeply into her because she couldn’t tell anyone. She was scared of being judged. It gradually led to her being depressed which till today, she doesn’t know how she got out of. This time around, she wants a change but doesn’t know how to go about it.
She talks to her friends telling them all about her past and how it keeps haunting her. They remind her about the fact that her past does not exist anymore in Christ. How she’s been made a completely new person with no record of her past life. She begins to find herself again – draws closer to GOD and is determined not to let guilt and condemnation consume her…
P. S: This is one of the reasons your parents keep insisting on you having good friends LOL!
Now, many of us are like Adesua. You might not have had a really messy past but you have probably done some things you are not proud of. You met Christ alright and when the Pastor was saying ‘You are totally forgiven and do not have a past in Christ! ‘, you shouted ‘Glory! Ride on Pastor !’ Then comes the devil to whisper condemnation and guilt to you. Other times, it’s not the devil, it’s you! Check this Scripture out :
Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
ROMANS 8:34 NIV
It clearly says Christ is interceding on your behalf. Three beings have a part to play in your life: GOD, you and the devil. If God is not condemning you, it’s either you or the devil that is condemning you.
I used to think that when Scriptures says you should resist the devil, it was a one time thing. Well, I learned the hard way that it is not. Instead, it is an every second thing. You could just be walking and a nasty thought pops up in your head. You shake it off with Scriptures right? Then, he brings another nasty thought, you do same. Next, he brings a silly idea to your head, you begin to ruminate on it and be like ‘I could do this, it’s not like it’ll cause so much harm‘…
You thought you won but, before you know it, you’re dancing to his tunes already.
That is how he brings condemning thoughts too. Periodically. So, you always have to be ready to counter him. Not just with mere words but with Scriptures.
Taking a cue from Adesua, you can also reach out to your friends or people who are more spiritually mature than you are. It will go a long way in helping you get out of it.
So, stop the condemnation ! We rarely realize that we do this, but it’s not a mistake that GOD is making you aware now. Forgive yourself and move on, leaving condemnation and guilt behind. Then, it will be easier when the devil whispers those thoughts to you and easier for you to live a victorious life in Christ.
I hope you were inspired by this. Please share to that person on your mind right now. Also, please leave your thoughts and questions in the comment section as I always love to hear from you.
